A search and recovery team heads into the haunted swamp to pick up the pieces and Marybeth (Danielle Harris) learns the secret to ending the voodoo curse that has left Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder) haunting and terrorizing Honey Island Swamp for decades. If you were to judge by the ratings on the Internet Movie Database, you would think that "Hatchet" was a dud and the sequels are no better. And this is one of the misleading things about horror films. Is "Hatchet" the type of film that will drowning in Academy Awards? No (although the horror genre does seem to get short shrift in the makeup category). But that has never been the point. Few horror films of the last decade have the fun and style that horror fans love, but near the top of that list is "Hatchet". The power kept going with "Hatchet 2" and just keeps going through "Hatchet 3". The only stumbling block is the switch on the actress playing Marybeth (though I think Harris is probably a better choice given how loved she is by fans). The blood, gore, humor and fun just keeps growing. What makes the films fun for horror fans -- beyond the endless blood spraying and whatnot, with the body count again increasing -- is the long list of familiar faces. This time around we add Sid Haig, Zach Galligan, Jason "J Tro" Trost, Derek Mears, Caroline Williams and more. Can you recognize them all and know where they are from? There are some nitpicks. I think it may not have been the best decision to put so much gore in the first five minutes. This is a great scene and really sets the mood, but it makes the slower moments seem even less spectacular by comparison. Be sure to pick up Dark Sky's Blu-ray with two different commentaries that are informative not only on this film but on the horror genre in general. There are also some good behind-the-scenes footage of how Kane's makeup is applied and how terrible mosquitoes are in the Louisiana swamps. Truly a must-own disc for the fans.

BJ McDonnell did an excellent job as a novice director. I think with the writing of Adam Green the creator of the series it is the perfect team.I was happy to see Derek Mears as the swat leader. I was impressed by the special effects. They really created new ways for new victims. The music score was very suspenseful! I waited for a year to watch this fantastic movie. I would like every film student to watch the Hatchet series. There is so much to learn from Adam Green and his entire cast and crew. In Hatchet 3 the sets are designed with the script in mind. There are some interesting shots that i would not think before. Kane Hodder had to act, wear prosthetics, make up and do stunts in high heat of Louisiana. I say Excellent to him! In overall, a new American horror as a new name: Victor Crowley. 10/10

"You come into a police station covered in someone else's blood head to toe. Your carrying a weapon and a piece of somebody's head and the best you got for me as an alibi is some kind of urban legend?" Marybeth (Harris) has finally killed Victor Crowley. When she shows up at the police station covered in blood the sheriff doesn't believe her story and locks her up while his crew goes out to look at what happened. While they are there one by one they get killed. Is it possible that Victor has come back again? I'm not sure what the fascination is with trilogies lately but this is an example of a movie being made just because they wanted a trilogy for this series. The movie could have been done in about a half hour but it was drug out for an hour and a half. The movie is basically the sheriff yelling at everyone mixed in with gore and a lot of blood. The first one in the series was OK, but I never thought I wish they made more. Hopefully this one closes the series, but if they can make 6 Fast and Furious movies I'm not hanging on to the dream of no Hatchet 4. Overall, if you liked the others then you will like this, or if you like gratuitous gore and blood then this is for you. If you want an actual plot then look elsewhere. I give it a C-.

Still alive after her battle with Victor Crowley, a woman is forced to go back into the swamps to save the rescue team attempting to find the cause of the disappearances and find him still alive and hunting them down with barbaric viciousness. Overall this was an utterly enjoyable and over-the-top entry in the series that makes for a wholly enjoyable time here. What really works for this one is the sheer, utter ruthlessness on display throughout the film, which ranges from the opening attack that continues on the themes from the previous entry to the way this one goes for the different attacks and encounters throughout here, there's hardly anything in here that goes for subtlety as it's so over-the-top and gleeful in doling out this extremely fun time. There's also the return here of the utterly brutal and graphic kills that were part of the first one being put to great effect as this one is just so bloody and graphic that it manages to top the original in several cases with the brutality of the kills on display which are not only impressive for the spectacle but also for the creativity into featuring them all in one singular film. That alone would've made this one incredibly enjoyable even before the exploits of what really make this one work in the outstanding action scenes that are simply overflowing throughout the film, not only giving this another positive itself in the frantic pace but also giving this one some of the most enjoyable aspects of itself. The opening attack in the swamp is a great continuation, but it also sets up the first of the many encounters here where the recovery team meets their fate on the river-boat, the resulting massacre in the swamps and finally the film's best parts where the SWAT team is targeting the killer in here through some utterly fantastic action scenes where their weaponry is brought to bear on his hideout which results in a frantic firefight in the jungle, a series of blazing encounters where he just annihilates the entire troupe and being forced to using a bazooka in the situation all to no avail as he continues the assault on them. The final attack on the survivors in the remains of the river-boat is equally impressive resulting in some genuine tension and suspense in the situation as the slowly-growing hole and reduced shelter spaces works against the race to get there for the final dealing blow here is equally enjoyable. Likewise, the suspense from their trek through the dim, eerie swamps at the beginning makes for quite an enjoyable time, as well as allowing for a great break against the unrelenting violence, and coupled with the grisly humor throughout here and the strong story that ties the series together all makes this one truly a lot of fun. While some might find issue with the over-the- top gore, it's not enough of a detriment here against this to hold it down. Rated R: Extreme Graphic Violence, Graphic Language and Graphic Nudity.
