As Winfried tries to mend bridges with his daughter Ines, their different personalities get in the way as Ines's practical nature leaves her resentful of her father's pranks and jokes. Winfried then dons a disguise as Toni Erdmann, a life coach who ingratiates himself in Ines's work environment.
