Journey to Greenland

Thomas and Thomas are going through a rough patch: they are both thirty-something actors living in Paris. They randomly decide to leave the city and fly away to Kullorsuaq, one of the most remote villages of Greenland, where Thomas' father Nathan lives. Among the Inuit community, they will discover the charms of the local customs and their friendship will be challenged.

Greenland's endless expanses of snow and ice fill the screen in this calm and beautiful movie. Told in sparse dialogue, the story is slow paced and gentle. Two young men from Paris, France, who are both named Thomas, visit the one's father who lives in a remote village in Greenland. They witness what his daily routine is like and spend time at gatherings with the community, laughing and chatting. At night they talk quietly about this and that since the constant daylight makes it difficult for them to go to sleep. The Thomases are both mild mannered and soft spoken, and there is very little conflict in this film. It mostly shows a slice of life in this remote village as experienced by the two visitors. The modulated tones and wide empty vistas make this a relaxing and meditative film to watch.

I saw this move one night after being in Sisimiut for two months and my god, it cracked me up! The french and Greenlandic cultural barriers clash multiple times and when you've been to Greenland you understand it even better. I recommend this movie to people going to Greenland as its a very good cultural introduction even though many things are not alike in other more modern cities like Illulissat, Sisimiut, Nuuk etc. Fx seals heart eating, a whole town non-alchoholic etc, but many things are still alike like sealhunting, the emptying of toilets in the tank, little variety in the supermarkets etc. I loved to understand the lyrics in the Greenlandic rock band by subtitles to hear their frustration and to hear their words, not often are things translated so one is missing out a lot when living in Greenland. I also found the romance between Thomas and the Greenlandic girl to be more profound in context as it is a problem in many Greenlandic villages with suicide unfortunately. I found myself laughing out loud numerous times throughout the movie and I find it to be hilarious and so well played! Such good actors with great skills in acting, a fantastic plot and it just leaves you with a strange feeling of such different cultures. A very interesting and marvelous cultural movie that I really recommend.

Greenland is icy, Iceland is Green. SPOILERS -- Fun, low key journal of two Frenchmen spending (a week ? a month ?) in Greenland, where they visit the father of one of them. The running gag is that they are both named Thomas. And Dad asks if they are boyfriends. Not much of a script... some minor plot points. One of them likes one of the locals, and Dad may or may not have serious heart issues. The real star here is the town, built on the edge of the frozen sea. There are some interesting townies, and we watch them go on a seal hunt. Warning - that part is definitely not for the young ones. We are watching the Inuit, so we are observing what the Inuit are legally allowed to do. Of course they talk about the challenges of trying to sleep when it stays light most of the day. I was in Iceland where the same thing happens.. can be fun if you are there for just a short spell! They form bonds with the local people, and it wraps up with them leaving to head back to Paree. Fun to watch, but its very slow and steady... nothing too challenging or exciting happens. The year before, writer/director Sébastien Betbeder had made a thirty minute film "Inupiluk", also dealing with the people of Greenland . Not sure if this is the next chapter in that story, or maybe just a longer, film-length version of the same story. Is this a tale from Bedbeder's actual life? It's an interesting watch, either way. Showing on netflix...

This is an absolute piece of pseudo intellectual trash . Nothing ,absolutely nothing good can be said about this "film" which has really no story line ,no.memorable characters to speak of and ,worst of all ,takes place in a most desolate ,depressing part of the world .

This is a sweet film. Don't expect massive action scenes or high drama. Two friends from France, both mildly successful? failed? actors, and both named Thomas, visit Greenland where Thomas1's father lives. They become immersed in life in a remote village, learn about Inuit culture, and learn about themselves. The cinematography is excellent. Describes the joys and challenges of living in a cold, small, remote village near the arctic circle. Food. Internet access. The lure of "civilization". Love, joy and mortality are all themes dealt with in the story. The film is believable, and you will sympathize with the protagonists. Stunning scenery. A heartwarming and touching tale.

The script is clever and kind. Thomas and Thomas give us a window into inuit culture in Greenland, which is lovely, but mainly this movie is about connection. It offers us lovely pause and reflection.

Dunno why but sounds like the French filmmakers are probably the best in making this kind of 'cool comedy' for the lack of a better phrase!? :D this is surely not the kind of movie you'd find selling hundreds of thousands in any global currency ... (not even in French Franks for sure, much less to sell in millions and certainly NOT in billions!) but for those who do 'understand' this sub-genre of (let's call it French-) comedy, it is quite enjoyable especially with the rather odd and somewhat rare choice of location and dealing with a small colony of a perhaps declining-in-numbers ethnic people others around the world know little to nothing about ... not so curiously, even though this is a comedy movie, you wouldn't find many OBVIOUS funny scenes in it really but the few that are there, are worthy enough of a memorable watch ...

I came very close to absolutely falling in love with this film. A slightly unsatisfactory ending and underdeveloped relationship took something away from making it a truly remarkable film. Despite that, I loved feeling like I had been transported to beautiful Greenland. In many ways, the landscapes of Greenland felt like the most prominent and well-developed character in the entire film. The cinematography was beautiful and constantly left me in awe. Journey to Greenland often felt like a travelogue or documentary. I loved the slice-of-life vibe of it all and small, close-knit community atmosphere. I also found myself laughing out loud numerous times throughout the movie. The cultural barriers and fish-out-of-water aspects provided much of the humour. If you're into French comedy or have an interest in Greenland, I highly recommend this film. Underrated little movie and a good reason to have Greenland on my bucket list.
